Summary: FedEx (or UPS) rejects a shipment with an account-number or third-party validation error even though the account matches. The carrier is rejecting it on their side, so the account holder must verify the account with the carrier.

Problem

A FedEx shipment fails with an account-number or third-party account validation error, sometimes for an account that worked before or works at another location. Example messages (FedEx wording shown; other carriers word it a little differently):

"ACCOUNT.NUMBER.INVALID" / "Account number not found. Please provide a valid account number."

"ACCOUNT.VALIDATION.FAILED" / "This account cannot be found. Please update and try again."

"Recipient/Third Party Account Validation Failed"

The same thing happens on a UPS third-party (TPBILL) shipment, where UPS rejects the third-party account. A FedEx third-party-billed shipment can also return "Authentication failed" when the third-party account is invalid.

Cause

The error comes from the carrier's own account check, not from Shipstore. Shipstore sends the account number on the shipment or carrier record; the carrier rejects it because, on their side, the account is not valid or not authorized for that shipment (for example, third-party billing is not enabled, the details do not match the carrier's records, or the carrier has an intermittent issue). On a third-party (TPBILL) shipment, Shipstore is not rate shopping the third-party account, so a rejection is the carrier validating the account you supplied. Because Shipstore is not the account holder, the carrier will not share account details with Shipstore.

Fix

  1. Confirm the account number on the shipment or carrier record is the one you intend to use.
  2. Reprocess a shipment that worked before. If it now fails with the same error, that points to a carrier-side account issue, not a setup change.
  3. If a third-party-billed shipment fails with "Authentication failed," process a prepaid shipment on the same main account. If the prepaid shipment works, the main account is fine and the third-party account is the problem; verify and correct it. If the prepaid shipment also fails with an authentication error, treat it as a main-account credential or registration problem instead (see Related).
  4. For a third-party (TPBILL) failure, confirm the shipment is billing the intended third-party account, then have the account holder verify that account with the carrier.
  5. Have the account holder contact the carrier to confirm the account is active and authorized for the shipment type, including third-party or consignee billing if used.
  6. Once the carrier confirms the account, reprocess. If only one account number fails, use the corrected, authorized number.

What you should see

After the carrier confirms and authorizes the account, a test shipment processes without the account-number error. A known-good account processes normally.
