Summary: If FedEx Ground Economy (SmartPost) says the shipment exceeded the weight limit for this package type, check the package weight. Use the Parcel Select option for packages of 1 lb or more, and the Standard option for packages under 1 lb.
Problem
You ship a package with FedEx Ground Economy (SmartPost) and get an error that the shipment exceeded the weight limit for this package type, even though the package is well under the carrier maximum.
Cause
FedEx Ground Economy has one option for packages under 1 lb and another for packages of 1 lb or more. The Standard option is for packages under 1 lb, so a heavier package on Standard fails. How to check: the package weighs 1 lb or more and the service is SmartPost Standard.
Fix
- Check the package weight.
- If it is 1 lb or more, select the Ground Economy Parcel Select option and process the shipment again.
- If it is under 1 lb, keep the Standard option.
- If you do not see a Parcel Select option, ask your FedEx representative which Ground Economy services your account includes.
What you should see
The shipment processes and the label prints with no weight-limit error.
Carrier reference
FedEx Ground Economy accepts packages up to 70 lb (FedEx Ground Economy Guide and fedex.com).
