Summary: A USPS shipment to a military APO, FPO, or DPO address can fail with "Invalid customs item data" when a commodity line item has no weight. Add the weight to each commodity line item and process again.

Problem

You ship to a military APO, FPO, or DPO address with a USPS service and the shipment fails with "Invalid customs item data". The commodity details look complete.

Cause

Military mail sent overseas needs customs details, even though the address is a domestic USPS address. If a commodity line item has no weight, the customs item data is incomplete and is rejected.

Fix

  1. Open the shipment and go to the international commodity line items.
  2. Enter a weight on each commodity line item.
  3. Process the shipment again, or reprocess it from Shipping History.
  4. If a different error appears, contact support with the shipment number and the new error text.
