UPS domestic shipments: ship-from (your origin) address fields

Summary: This is what UPS needs for the ship-from (your origin address) and your UPS account on a domestic shipment, how long each field can be, and the exact "Missing or invalid shipper" errors you get when a field or the account is wrong. For the overview of both addresses, see "UPS domestic shipments: required address fields and length limits."

The origin and UPS account usually come from your profile and carrier setup, not from the order. So these errors most often mean a profile setting is blank or wrong.

What UPS requires for the origin

The shipper (origin) needs all of these:

  • Name
  • Your UPS account number (the Shipper Number)
  • Street address (at least the first line)
  • City
  • State (the 2-letter code)
  • ZIP code
  • Country

There is also a ship-from address. You only need it for return shipments, or when the package is picked up somewhere other than your origin. When you use it, it needs a name and a full address.

The UPS account rules

  • Your UPS account (Shipper Number) must be for the same country as your origin address.
  • On prepaid shipments, the account being billed must be the same as your Shipper Number.

These are set in your UPS account setup under your profile. If one is wrong, an admin fixes it there; a warehouse user cannot change it on the shipment.

How long each field can be

FieldLongest it can be
Name35 characters
UPS account number (Shipper Number)6 characters
Street address35 characters per line, up to 3 lines
City30 characters
State2-letter code
ZIP code5 digits, or 9 for ZIP+4
Country2-letter code

Only the first street line prints on the label for the origin. That is normal.

The errors you may see, and how to fix them

UPS shows the exact wording below. Most point to your profile's origin address or UPS account setup.

  • Missing or invalid shipper number - Your UPS account number is blank or wrong in the profile. Check the UPS account in your carrier setup.
  • Missing or invalid shipper name - The origin name is blank or over 35 characters. Fix it in the profile origin.
  • Missing or invalid shipper address line 1 - The origin street is blank or over 35 characters. Shorten it, or move the extra part to a second line.
  • Missing or invalid Shipper City - The origin city is blank or over 30 characters. Check it.
  • Missing or invalid Shipper StateProvinceCode - The origin state is blank or wrong for a US or Canada address. Enter the correct 2-letter state code.
  • Missing or invalid Shipper PostalCode - The origin ZIP is blank or not valid for the state. Fix the ZIP.
  • The country associated with Shippers ShipperNumber must be the same as the shipments Shippers country - Your UPS account is for a different country than the origin address. Make the origin country match the account, or have an admin set the correct UPS account.
  • Missing or invalid ShipFrom CompanyName - You are using a ship-from address but it has no name. Add a name to the ship-from.

What you should see

After you fix the field or the account and try again, the label prints.
