UPS rating fails with error 111578, "A single payment method is required per shipment charge," when the shipment carries more than one payment method for the same charge. Set a single billing term, clear any extra or duplicate payment entry, and rate again.

Problem

You rate a UPS shipment and it fails. You see this error:

UPS Error: Error rating shipment - System.Exception: {"response":{"errors":[{"code":"111578","message":"A single payment method is required per shipment charge."}]}}

This can happen on a manual order and on a loaded order, including international destinations such as Canada.

Cause

UPS allows exactly one payment method per shipment charge. Error 111578 comes back when the request has more than one payment method for the same charge, or a duplicate or half-entered payment entry, so UPS cannot tell who to bill. In the reported case the error cleared after a hard refresh, which points to a stale or duplicated payment state in the browser session rather than a permanent setting.

How to check: look at the billing terms on the shipment. If more than one payment method is set, or a payment entry looks duplicated or incomplete, that is the cause.

Fix

  1. Open the shipment and check the billing terms. Make sure only one payment method is set (for example, Prepaid, or Third Party with one account).
  2. Remove any duplicate or half-entered payment or billing entry.
  3. For an international destination, make sure a valid international service is selected (for example, UPS Standard to Canada).
  4. Do a hard refresh to clear a stale session: press Ctrl+Shift+R, then rate again.
  5. If it keeps happening, check whether a business rule or a profile default is adding a second payment method.

What you should see

  • The shipment rates without error 111578.
  • The billing terms show a single payment method.
  • A rate and label come back for the service you picked.
