USPS Ground Advantage fails to rate: GORI 422 deserialize error

Problem

You try to make a USPS Ground Advantage label and it fails with this error (GORI is the USPS provider Shipstore uses for Ground Advantage):

Could not deserialize the response body stream as GORI.API.ErrorResponse. Status: 422 Response

This often happens on APO or other military (PSC) addresses.

Cause

The ZIP was sent in a format the provider rejects, so it returns a 422 error that Shipstore cannot read back cleanly. A clean 5-digit ZIP, or a ZIP+4 written with a hyphen (for example 12345-6789), fixes the request.

How to check: look at the ship-to ZIP. If it has extra characters, spaces, or a ZIP+4 with no hyphen, that is the cause.

Fix

Open the shipment's ship-to address.
Set the ZIP to a clean 5-digit ZIP (for example 12345), or a ZIP+4 with a hyphen (for example 12345-6789).
Remove any extra characters or spaces from the ZIP field.
For an APO, FPO, or DPO address, enter the ZIP and the military city and state (APO, FPO, or DPO) in the standard USPS format.
Re-rate and process the Ground Advantage label.
