A shipment costs far more than expected: large-package surcharge

Summary: When a shipment costs much more than a similar one, or the billed weight is far above the actual weight (for example a 34 lb box billed at 90 lb), the cause is usually the carrier's large-package (oversize) rule, which sets a 90 lb minimum billable weight. Shipstore only shows what the carrier returns.

Problem

The billed weight is much higher than the package's actual weight, or one shipment costs many times more than a near-identical one to a different address. For example, a 34 lb package measuring 42x41x5 inches is billed at 90 lb.

Cause

Carriers bill on the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, and a separate large-package rule sets a floor. When length plus girth (length + 2 x width + 2 x height) is more than 130 inches, both UPS (Large Package Surcharge) and FedEx (Oversize Charge) treat the package as a large package and apply a 90 lb minimum billable weight, no matter the actual weight. As of the 2026 rules, UPS also applies the surcharge when cubic volume is over 17,280 cubic inches, actual weight is over 110 lb, or any single dimension is over 96 inches. Service level (for example Ground vs Ground Home Delivery) and the destination zone also change the price.

How to check: add length + 2 x width + 2 x height. If it is over 130 inches, the package rates as a large package with a 90 lb minimum.

Fix

  1. Open the shipment and click the rate total under Results to see the itemized charges.
  2. Add length + 2 x width + 2 x height. If it is over 130 inches, the package rates as a large package with a 90 lb minimum billable weight.
  3. Compare the service level (Ground vs Ground Home Delivery) and the destination zone between the two shipments.
  4. Where you can, reduce the size or repackage to drop below the large-package limits.
  5. If the carrier returned the rate and you believe it is wrong, take it up with the carrier. Shipstore shows carrier-returned rates and does not set them.

What you should see

The itemized charges show a large-package or oversize surcharge and a 90 lb billable weight, and your recomputed length plus girth is over 130 inches.
