UPS End of Day Report and the "Single Barcode" Driver Summary
Why Shipstore does not print a one-barcode driver summary page, and why you do not need one.
What is the single barcode the driver is describing?
Your driver is describing the UPS Pickup Summary Barcode Report. It is one of the reports that UPS WorldShip prints during its "End of Day" process. The page carries a single barcode that encodes the shipper's account number, a unique shipping record identifier, and the total number of packages to be picked up. The driver scans that one barcode with their handheld device to confirm the pickup, rather than scanning each package. It is essentially a pickup receipt for WorldShip shipments.
Does Shipstore generate this report?
No. The Pickup Summary Barcode Report and the rest of the End of Day report set are generated only by UPS WorldShip. They are a function of that specific desktop software. Shipstore creates your UPS labels through UPS's shipping API, which does not offer an end-of-day report or a consolidated pickup barcode. This is a UPS design difference between the two methods, not a missing feature in Shipstore.
Can the UPS API generate this barcode at all?
No, and UPS states this in its own developer documentation. The UPS Developer Kit User Guide lists "End of Day processing" among the functions the UPS Shipping API does not support. UPS's current published API catalog (Shipping, Pickup, Rating, Tracking, Time in Transit, Address Validation, Dangerous Goods, Locator, Paperless Documents, and TradeAbility) includes no end-of-day, manifest, or pickup-summary-barcode API. The Pickup API only schedules a driver pickup; it does not produce a scannable summary document. In short, no API-based shipping platform can generate the WorldShip Pickup Summary Barcode, because UPS does not expose that capability through the API. See the UPS sources listed at the end of this article.
Then how does UPS know about my packages?
Every time you create a UPS label in Shipstore, the shipment data (what UPS calls Package Level Detail) is transmitted to UPS electronically as part of creating that label. By the time your packages are ready, UPS already has the details for all of them. That is why labels created through Shipstore carry the small "pre-scanned" package icon in the corner: it tells the driver the packages are already in UPS's system.
Does UPS require an end-of-day report or summary barcode?
No. Because the package data is transmitted at the time each label is created, UPS does not require a printed manifest, end-of-day form, or summary barcode for labels created through an API-based platform like Shipstore. The driver can accept pre-scanned packages directly. The WorldShip End of Day process exists because WorldShip holds shipments locally and sends them to UPS in one batch at the end of the day; API-created labels skip that step entirely.
Why does the driver expect a single barcode?
Many shippers still use WorldShip, so drivers regularly see the Pickup Summary Barcode page and it is convenient for them to scan one barcode. With a modern, API-based platform, that convenience step is replaced by the electronic transmission that already happened when you printed your labels. If a driver asks for the page, you can let them know your labels are pre-scanned and simply confirm the package count with them.
What if I specifically need a scannable pickup summary?
A single scannable end-of-day summary barcode is only available through UPS WorldShip. If your operation requires that document, you would need to run WorldShip for those shipments. For most shippers this is unnecessary, and running both WorldShip and Shipstore for the same packages can cause duplicate shipment records with UPS.
