Summary
When you ship a package with a return label inside it, the return label's tracking number is stored on the package, not on the main shipment line. Open the outbound shipment in Shipment History, open Package Details, click the cog icon on that package's row, and read Return Tracking # under Misc.
Before you start
You need the outbound shipment, the one that was created with Print Return Labels with this Shipment turned on. You do not need the reference fields.
Steps
- Go to Shipment History and open the original outbound shipment.
- Click the Package Details tab.
- Click the cog icon to the right of the package's line.
- Read Return Tracking # under the Misc section. That is the tracking number for the return label that shipped in that package.
What you should see
Return Tracking # is filled in under Misc, and the number belongs to the carrier used for the return service, which can be a different carrier than the outbound shipment.
If something goes wrong
The return tracking link opens the wrong carrier's site: on older releases the link pointed at the outbound carrier, so a return going out on one carrier could open another carrier's tracking page. That was corrected in a website release. Until your site is on that release, copy the number and track it on the return carrier's own site.
There is no Return Tracking # on the package: the shipment was probably not created with Print Return Labels with this Shipment turned on, so no return label exists. Create a return label instead. See the related article.
