PreRate error: service "not set up on profile"

Summary: Processing fails with "service ... not set up on profile" when a business rule or rate shop picks a carrier service the profile does not have. Add that service to the profile to clear it.

Problem

A carrier service does not fill in on your orders, and processing stops with this error (the service code in the quotes changes with the service the rule picked):

Error running PreRate rules. Unable to continue, service '' not set up on profile. Please add this service to the profile if you wish to use this option.

Sometimes the same error hits a service that is already set up, on every profile at once. On a batch, it can show per order as "not on profile" while some labels still print under a backup service.

Cause

A business rule (a PreRate rule) or a rate shop picked a carrier service that is not turned on for the profile processing the order. Every service a rule or rate shop can pick has to exist on that profile. If a service that used to work suddenly errors on all profiles, the link between the carrier and its services has gone stale.

How to check: Read the service code shown in the quotes, then open the profile and see if that service is listed. If it is missing, that is the cause.

Fix

When the service is missing from the profile:

Read the error and note the service code shown in quotes.
Go to Admin > Profiles and open the profile used for the order.
Add the named carrier service to that profile and click Save.
Reprocess the order.

When the error hits a service that is already set up, on every profile:

Remove the carrier and its services from each profile.
Add the carrier and its services back.
Log out, log back in, and hard refresh your browser (Ctrl + Shift + R).
Reprocess the order.

If a batch still shows Error after the service is added even though labels printed, reprocess the affected orders so the batch clears.

What you should see

The carrier service fills in and the order processes with no PreRate error.
