Summary: Shipstore can print IATA (air) and 49CFR (ground) dangerous goods paperwork for limited quantity and fully regulated hazmat. Four things have to be in place first: the carrier has to approve your account for dangerous goods, the documents have to be added to your profile, the hazmat details have to be on the shipment, and the emergency contact has to be set up on your site.
Before you start
- Each carrier account has to be approved for dangerous goods by the carrier. Carriers turn hazmat shipments down on an account that is not approved.
- You need the hazmat details for what you ship: UN ID, the proper description, the class, and the quantity.
- You need an emergency contact name and a 24-hour phone number to print on the paperwork.
- Shipstore does not classify your material. Deciding what is regulated, and how, stays with you and your carrier.
Steps
- Ask each carrier to approve your account for dangerous goods, and wait for them to confirm it. UPS and FedEx both turn hazmat shipments down on an account that is not approved.
- Email support@shipstore.com and ask for the dangerous goods documents you need to be added to your profile: 49CFR, 49CFR Manifest, Cross Border 49CFR, IATA Dangerous Goods, and USPS Dangerous Goods.
- In the same email, give the emergency contact name and the 24-hour phone number that has to print on the paperwork. This is set up on your site so it prints on every 49CFR and IATA document and is sent to the carrier.
- Enter the dangerous goods details on the shipment at Ship > Package > Advanced > Hazmat: UN ID, description, class, and quantity.
- For orders that come in from a feed or a batch, keep the hazmat details on the item so nobody has to type them each time. Not every hazmat field shows in the Item Book, so email support@shipstore.com for the fields you cannot see on screen.
- Ship one test dangerous goods shipment per carrier and check the label and the paperwork print.
What you should see
The test shipment processes on each approved account, and the IATA or 49CFR document prints with your emergency contact on it. Shipments that are not hazmat are not affected.
If something goes wrong
- The carrier turns the shipment down at process time. The account is not approved for dangerous goods yet. Go back to the carrier.
- No dangerous goods document prints. The document is not on your profile yet. Email support@shipstore.com.
- The UPS document will not print on plain paper. UPS sends its IATA declaration back with the label and it has to print on the striped stock UPS supplies. Plain paper is not an option for it. FedEx does not send its documents back, so Shipstore prints the FedEx IATA and 49CFR paperwork for you.
