UPS requires a destination phone number, so a UPS order with a blank Ship To phone will not process. Set a global Business Rule that fills the Ship To phone with a fallback number whenever it is blank, so shipments process without editing every order.
Problem
UPS shipments will not process when the Ship To phone is blank. UPS requires a phone number on the shipment, and editing the phone on each order by hand is not practical.
Cause
UPS needs a Ship To phone number on the shipment. When an order comes in with no phone, the shipment cannot finish. Fixing the phone one order at a time does not scale, so a Business Rule fills the value for you when the field is blank.
How to check: the orders that fail have a blank Ship To phone, and they process once a phone is present.
Fix
- Open Business Rules and add a global rule.
- Set the condition to run only when the Ship To phone is blank or empty.
- Set the action to fill the Ship To phone with a fallback number (for example, your own shipping phone).
- Save the rule.
- Process a test order that has no phone and confirm it goes through.
What you should see
- A UPS order with a blank Ship To phone processes without error.
- The fallback phone shows on the shipment and label.
- Orders that already have a phone are not changed.
